If I'd come out when I "should have"-- in my teens, in high school, at a time when AIDS was first actively being ignored as the 'gay man's disease'-- statistically at least, I'd probably be dead now. My one regret: If I'd come out when I "should have"-- at a time when the gay community heard it's first rallying cry-- statistically at least, several of my brethren would probably still be alive now.

Silence equals death doesn't only apply to vector epidemics. It can apply to community and love also.

I came out in the early 80's and luckily not the 70's when people got the virus. I witnessed friends who died of this terrible disease and it was the darkest time in the gay history. Hopefully all this will stop when cure arrive....
